Pedestrian dies after being hit by tractor-trailer on I-95 off-ramp in Fairfield

(Fairfield, ME) January 3, 2025 – A pedestrian in Fairfield is dead after he was struck by a tractor
trailer truck this morning. Mark Michaud, 49, of Fairfield was crossing the I-95 southbound exit 132 off
ramp in Fairfield about 3:37 a.m. when a tractor-trailer driven by 19-year-old Damon Sylvia of Milford hit
him, according to Maine State Police Lt. Aaron Turcotte. When police arrived, Michaud was pronounced
dead, Turcotte said.

The off ramp, which is posted with stop signs, was closed during the investigation, which is ongoing, but
has since reopened. The state police commercial motor vehicle unit also inspected the tractor-trailer.
The crash remains under investigation and no additional information was immediately available.

“The BCM encourages all road users to exercise caution and be aware of vulnerable road users,
including pedestrians, cyclists and people using mobility devices” said Paul Drinan, Active
Transportation Director for the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM). The BCM encourages all drivers to
slow down and look for people biking, walking, or rolling. With the size of vehicles trending larger, we
remind drivers to take extra care in checking the spaces around them to ensure they are clear. The
BCM urges law enforcement to carefully examine the conditions, driver and pedestrian behavior, and
any additional circumstances that may have been contributing factors to the crash.
This is the first pedestrian killed in Maine this year, according to the State of Maine’s Maine Public
Crash Query Tool.
