Construction Flagger Killed by Driver

(Portland, ME) October 3, 2024 – A driver struck and killed a construction flagger on Route 1 in Orland. The incident occurred just before 7:00 a.m. on October 1 on Acadia Highway when Clint Clagett, 70, struck Charles Resh, 24.

“Our condolences to the family and friends of the victim.” said Jean Sideris, Bicycle Coalition of Maine executive director. “This is a tragic reminder that we all need to slow down and pay attention in construction zones and anywhere you are likely to encounter people sharing the road with vehicles, such as road workers, pedestrians, and cyclists.”

The BCM urges law enforcement to carefully examine driver behavior, phone use records, and any additional circumstances that may have contributed to the crashes.

This is the 8th pedestrian to be killed in Maine this year. Statewide, according to the MaineDOT crash query tool, 154 pedestrian crashes have been reported, slightly lower compared to a similar time frame last year. One cyclist has been killed and MaineDOT reports 154 crashes–significantly more bicycle crashes than this same timeframe last year.
