Portland Trails, Bicycle Coalition of Maine hope to slow down traffic on Diamond Street

(Portland, ME) by Ted Homer, WGME, September 3, 2024 – Portland drivers can expect some obstacles in the road on Diamond Street off Marginal Way.

Portland Trails and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine painted polka dots on the side of the road as a suggested sidewalk, as there are not many curbs in the area. There are also vertical flex posts and speed tables at the intersection with Bayside Trail.

Portland Trails says with all the breweries and shops in the area, there’s a lot of foot traffic, and not a lot to slow down drivers.

“We sort of wanted to build on the work that Bicycle Coalition had done and elevate the presence of pedestrians on the street,” Portland Trails and Transportation Manager Jaime Parker said.

Portland Trails has similar setups around the city, including the busy intersection of Fore, Center and Pleasant Streets. The installations are temporary and Portland Trails says all data from the sites will be shared with the city, which will manage any permanent design changes for those streets.
