Show Your Support of the BCM!

November, 2008

Dear Friend of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine,

As a Member of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) you have committed to the idea that bicycles have the power to transform lives and communities. The challenges before us -- a struggling economy paired with rising costs of health care and oil- are complex and daunting. Yet, great change begins with small acts.

You can make a real difference in your health, your community and your environment one bike ride at a time. We have a tremendous opportunity to promote cycling as a realworld solution to some of the toughest problems we face. In fact, few activities can positively address issues of health, energy security and a feeling of community better than cycling.

You lead. Your membership support of BCM makes Maine a better and safer place to bicycle. In 2008, the League of American Bicyclists ranked Maine the most bike-friendly state on the east coast and the 6th most bike-friendly state in the nation. The Bicycle Coalition’s actions are truly making a difference. BCM’s role as a national leader was also evident when New Hampshire modeled its new safety law after Maine’s statute requiring motorists to allow cyclists at least three feet. The New Hampshire bill was passed in June of this year.

These achievements reflect the success of BCM’s programs, including our work to:

  • Educate motorists about their responsibility to share the road;
  • Increase bicyclists’ access to trails and paths;
  • Engage the ME Dept. of Transportation to pave shoulders and bike lanes;
  • Teach bicyclists of all ages how to be safe bike drivers and
  • Advocate for bike-friendly policies and laws in Augusta, Washington DC and communities statewide.

You are committed to a bike-friendly Maine. To keep the momentum going, we need your continued support. As you consider your year-end giving, please make a donation today to continue the progress we have made towards a Maine that is safe and accessible for all bicyclists.

You care. You know that safety is of primary concern for bicyclists. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s programs and events help expand the pro-bike community. The education programs that your membership supports make sure these bicyclists are riding safely and promoting a positive image for all of us. As we grow Maine’s cycling community, good things happen -- motorists’ awareness is heightened, kids and adults lead more active lives and communities respect and respond to the rights of bicyclists.

You are the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Please take a moment to give a generous gift to continue BCM’s momentum moving toward a better future for all of us. Whether you bike on the road, in a time trial or on trails- BCM is here to work with you to fight for safer cycling, better communities and a healthier Maine.

In 2009, BCM is poised to capitalize on the recent and growing attention to living a green, healthy and balanced lifestyle. Join with your fellow bicyclists to support the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s advocacy for safer cycling and bike-friendly communities.

Best Wishes,

John A. Balicki
Board President

P.S. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is working hard every day for safe cycling for you and your family. Please consider a special, tax-deductible year-end gift of $100 or more.
