Safe Routes to School: Programs and Events

Safe Routes to School programs and events differ at every school. Schools can choose aspects of the program that best fit their needs. Listed below are some of the most popular programs and events, but there are many other options. Check out our links page for even more ideas or contact us and we would be happy to help!

Walk and Bike to School Day: Holding a one-day event can really build awareness among students and parents of the benefits of walking and bicycling to school. Walk and Bike to School Days can be held anytime of the year, but nice weather always helps get a great turnout. If your school wants to be part of a larger event, you can participate with hundreds of other schools for International Walk to School Day, the first Wednesday of each October (visit the Walk to School site for details). This is a great world.

Walking Wednesday or Trekking Tuesday/Thursday: Encouraging parents and kids to plan to walk or bike one day a week is a great way to start a good habit. By encouraging kids to walk or bike on the same day, students and parents can make arrangements to walk or bike together.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Training: We always recommend that students receive some type of basic bicycle and pedestrian safety before any event. BCM offers bicycle and pedestrian safety training to schools as part of our Bicycle Safety Education program. Contact us if you are interested in having a Bicycle Safety Instructor come to your school.

Walking BusWalking School Buses and Bicycle Trains: Kids love to walk and bike to school together and coordinating a Walking School Bus or Bicycle Train is an easy way to promote safety and parent supervision. A parent volunteer can "pick up" neighborhood kids along a designated route to school and supervise the group on the walk or bike to school.
